Production Notes:
When I had an exhibition in Chengdu, China, a Tibetan Buddhist high monk happened to visit my work. He invited me to join a drawing retreat with his brother, who is a Tibetan Buddhist painter. I accepted, without knowing that his home was at an altitude of 3,500 meters.
I have no religion, but before going there I studied what Tibetan Buddhism is, including its paintings. There are works called thangka and mandala. In both, the subject, composition, and geometric layout are strictly decided based on Buddhist teachings, and the artist paints very carefully within those rules.
Using the ideas behind this geometric structure and composition, I combined the themes I was exploring at that time: reincarnation, the beginning of life, reproduction, and the end of life. By coincidence, Tibetan Buddhism also has the idea of rebirth, so it connected well with my own theme. While painting, I felt a strange sense of familiarity, as if it was something I already knew.
